Summary: Rodney is laid up and a prisoner of Carson's. What does have to entertain himself with?

Note: Written for [livejournal.com profile] xanthelj as a part of her get well project organized by [livejournal.com profile] taylorgibbs. Now, I am not a slash fan, at all. Well, except for small doses of John/Cam, and I am certainly not a fan of John/Rodney, but for the sake of a dedicated fan to the fandom(s), I tried. I really did. I hope you like it.

"More jello!" McKay called out as he slammed his empty cup on his medical tray.

Carson sighed from his office and nodded to a nurse who glanced in at him with irritation. Ever since the team came back and Rodney broke his leg to the point of requiring surgery, he had been nothing but a headache to the medical staff.

For the first week, it wasn't so bad. Colonel Sheppard and Teyla had stayed with the man, keeping him distracted but they both had to go to Earth for some IOA meeting leaving Ronon to manage the scientist on his own. After two attempts by the Satedan to strangle his friend, first with his IV line, then by bending the metal pole that held the medication bags, he had to be barred from the infirmary unless he was the patient.

"Oh how much longer will you be Colonel?" Carson mused to himself as he watched the man going off again about one thing or another to the nurse.

"Oh thank god! Do you know your wild ape of a man tried to kill me? Twice?! And Carson has been pumping me full of drugs that I don't know what they are but ooh man do they feel good!" Rodney cried out as his friends walked in to visit him not long after their return.

"It is a pleasure to see you too Rodney," Teyla smiled as she set her bags beside John's on the bed next to the patient.

John turned from looking over the items quickly and held his hands on his hips as he gave a lingering look to the man. "What?" Rodney asked, almost cowering down in his bed slightly.

"Did you really have to be such an ass to Beckett?" Sheppard asked simply.

"Well, I was bored and Ronon doesn't talk much. Plus I finished all the cross words, sudokus and puzzles that Zelenka sent with him. You wouldn't kick a dying man when he's down, would you?" he replied trying to give him his best impression of puppy dog eyes.

John let out a breath and looked at Teyla who only shrugged a shoulder as if to say he's your problem. Sighing, he scratched the back of his neck. "We brought you back some presents if that will make you happy," he said.

"Oh? Presents? What kind?" Rodney said, pushing aside his lunch and tried to peek around John.

"Just sit still!" he said as he dug into one bag. "Here are some books. They came highly recommended. I don't know if you read them yet or not. I – we, also got you more puzzles and stuff. Oh hey! Look, some crayons for you too!" As he pulled the box out of the one bag, another smaller bag fell to the floor where a red ball attached to some black leather straps appeared.

John's eyes grew large as Teyla picked it up. "What is this?" she asked looking at it curiously.

"Uh, nothing. I think someone else's stuff got mixed up in one of mine. I'll deal with it later," he muttered as he grabbed the ball gag and threw it back into the bag. Rodney could not help but smile as he looked wordlessly at John, already anticipating the day he would be free from Carson.

Coughing, he pointed back at the books. "Well, what books did you say you got?" he squeaked out.

"Oh, uh, Deep Six: Adventures of LJ Tibbs and Rock Hollow, it's sequel. I don't know if its your kind of thing but the reviews were pretty good," John said handing them over.

"Really? I have actually been wanting to read these books! Oh man! This is great! Did you know that there are thousands, maybe millions of fans that actually write stories based on the characters? A lot of it is pure crap but the imaginations are insane!"

John just looked at him, unsure of what to say. "Okay," was all he could come out with. "Well, then – how about to pass the time because we're already scheduled to head off world tomorrow, why don't you write one of those – stories?" Anything! Just give Carson a break! he thought.

"Yeah, yeah," Rodney waved him off as he was already reading eagerly in the first book.

Shaking his head, John grabbed his bags and walked out. It was going to be a long mission.

*~*~*~*~*

It was nearly four days later that the group returned from MX-4561 and no one on the team was happy. Sheppard suffered yet another concussion which earned him an overnight stay with Beckett. Teyla got a nasty cut on her arm but other than some stitches and antibiotics, she was released. Ronon? He flat out refused to stay in the infirmary, no matter what. Not that he was injured or anything. He just didn't want to hear McKay typing away at his computer all night.

John was ready to smother himself from the headache he had and his neighbor behind the curtain was not helping matters. "Would you please give it a rest for tonight?!"

"Huh? Oh no, I can't. I had so many ideas that I really wanted to get them down. Oh this is good! Agent Tibbs is had a secret crush on Agent Tommy for years but was never able to admit it. Even though he had four failed marriages. You know, it actually sounds like someone I know, except he only has one ex-wife," Rodney smirked.

"Don't say it," Sheppard muttered. Nancy had been a great girl, but it never worked out, mostly due to their jobs. "You do know I was joking, right?"

"Of course, but it's still fun. And since Carson won't give me a computer that is connected to the Atlantis system, I have nothing else to do. Plus, I think whatever drugs he has me on is facilitating a lot of this writing. Oh let's see...Ooh! I can have Agent Tommy accidently walk in on Tibbs. No, that wouldn't be right. Dammit. Oh! I know! I can have Tommy get injured in the line of duty and Tibbs discovers that he had been listed as his emergency contact! Oh this is good!"

"You do know those are fictional characters? Written probably by some pathetic guy with absolutely no time on his hands?" John asked.

"So? They are so great! And they seem so real. You know, the case in Rock Hollow sounds a lot like a news report I caught when the SGC sent me to DC for one of their reports to the tight asses on the hill. NCIS had been investigating a serial killer at the time," he shrugged.

"I doubt neither of the cases were actually related. One was reality the other was fiction, words. Nothing more. Now please? Just go to sleep? Otherwise you won't get that other surprise when Carson let's you outta here," Sheppard said, laying down the law.

Rodney picked his head up, and looked at him. While he had so many words in his head, he was sure he didn't want to miss out on that little preview he managed to get that afternoon, if it had been a part of John's plan to begin with. All he knew was that he got fucking excited as hell. Sighing, he gave in, closing the laptop.

"Fine. But – maybe, you can be Agent Tommy and I'll play Agent Tibbs?" he whispered.

"Whatever. Go to sleep," John sighed, turning in his bed smiling.
