toomuchfandom using our RPG characters, John/Elsa babysitting Athosian children courtesy of Teyla.
"Remind me again why we are doing this?" John asked as he passed by Elsa for what may be the tenth time as he chased down one of the Athosian toddlers.
She had been sitting with one of the infants with Torren at her feet. "Because Teyla's people have an adult bonding activity they rarely are able to perform and now have the means to do so by us helping care for their children during their absence," she answered as she reached down to pull the rock from Torren's hand that he was trying to put in his mouth.
Coming back to the tent, he shook his head as he set down the kid he was just trying to catch. "What are they doing? No. Wait. I don't want to know," he said trying to shake his head from the impure images that came to him.
Elsa grinned. "From what Teyla explained to me, it is mostly just spending time together. Sharing stories, drinking. She invited us the next time they are able to find someone to care for the children."
John had sat down exhausted from the lone hour he just spent trying to keep some of the ambulatory kids within eye-shot. Groaning, another boy started off for the treeline but luckily Jinto had stayed back and ran off for the kid. "And how did I end up here?"
"You volunteered yourself to help because you thought you and I might be able to spend some time together, assuming the kids would listen like perfect little angels."
"Right. Next time I'll just shoot myself in the foot."
"You will not," Elsa replied as she stood to put the baby she had in one of the playpens that Atlantis personnel ordered for the people. "I just finished plugging up the two holes you decided to come back with on your last mission. Next time, I'm just going to cut off your limb and see how you like not having an arm, or leg or....yeah!"
He looked at her with one of his signature pouty faces. "Not fair."
She laughed as she came back to sit down and watched out where Jinto tried to show the smaller children the football that John gave him years ago. She couldn't help but wonder what her beau was thinking then, and something told her that she would not like it.
"Oh come on!" John cried out as a small group began to scatter to where he had to get up and help Jinto wrangle the kids in again. After about another half hour or so of chasing the kids down and putting them down for a mandatory nap, he came back to the 'baby' tent. "Thank god I don't have any kids. I could not deal with this every day," he said tiredly and fell back down.
Elsa frowned and looked away, knowing that the shoe just dropped for her. "Did you ever think about being a father?" she asked as she leaned over to look at the small girl that laid next to her chair.
"Sure I have. When I was married to Nancy, we talked about it but our jobs just took up too much of our time. Even here, it's just not the right place to raise a kid. Nothing against Teyla. She's a great mom, but I don't want to bring a kid into this if I can help it," he said as he ran a hand over his face. Looking over at his girlfriend, warning bells were going off. "You weren't thinking about ..."
She sighed and looked up at him. "No, at least not in the way you are thinking. I agree to that – intentionally bringing a child in this life would be wrong. At least coming from what we know. The Athosians lived like this all their lives and they, or even us, shouldn't stop living just because there may be a culling next year, or in fifty years."
Something told John that she wasn't saying something. He knew she had the tendency for choosing her words carefully, and she did just then. After all the time they've been together, on and off, he knew her enough. "Elsa, what are you saying...or not saying?"
Elsa's eyes flickered over his face and then everywhere else, not wanting to tell him. "Nothing."
"Liar. You said...Wait. You said 'intentionally'. Which means that unintentionally, unplanned..." he repeated with the color from his face leaving him.
"I found out last week," she answered in a small voice. "I didn't know how to tell you and Teyla, she figured it out really fast. She helped plan today-"
"Yeah, she suggested I might want to keep you company," he said waving his hand, cutting her off as he paced the small area at the opening of the tent trying to digest the information.
Elsa sat there watching him, feeling sick at now knowing that he wasn't happy for them, for their baby. "If you don't want to be a part of his, or her, life, I am ready to do this alone. I don't want to end the pregnancy. If you want to have Woolsey send me back to Earth, then I will go."
John looked at her unable to speak. He just shook his head repeatedly. "I need to take a walk. I'll be back," he mumbled before disappearing around the tent and into the darkness of the forest line.
She stared at the ground where he had just stood, feeling like her heart was just ripped from her chest. Whispering, she laid a hand over her still flat belly. "We're going to be parents...John."
